After 24 Years as Susan, Maumela Mahuwa launches Arts Academy

Beloved actress Maumela Mahuwa, renowned for her iconic role as Susan on the popular SABC 2 soapie Muvhango, has begun a new chapter after 24 years on the show.

Mahuwa has officially opened her own arts academy, a venture she says is close to her heart and aims to empower young people who aspire to careers in the creative industry.

Speaking about the new chapter in her life, Mahuwa expressed gratitude for the years she spent portraying Susan, a character that made her a household name across South Africa.

“Playing Susan for more than two decades has been a blessing and a learning curve. Now, I want to use my experience to inspire, mentor, and nurture new talent,” she said.

The academy will offer training in acting, performance, and other creative disciplines, providing opportunities for young people to develop their skills and gain exposure to the entertainment industry.

Mahuwa’s decision to establish the institution comes at a time when the South African arts sector is grappling with challenges of sustainability and limited opportunities for emerging artists. She hopes her contribution will bridge some of those gaps and create a platform for fresh talent.

“I believe that art has the power to transform lives. My goal is to create a space where creativity and passion can flourish,” Mahuwa added.

Fans of Muvhango have celebrated her bold step, with many applauding her for giving back to the industry that made her a star.
