Workplace bullying has quietly become one of South Africa’s most damaging workplace challenges, with thousands of employees suffering in silence while productivity and mental health take a toll.
Recent findings reveal that 31.1% of South African employees’ report being bullied at work, while more than half say their organisations lack clear policies to address such behaviour. Behind these figures lies growing crisis, one that thrives in silence, fear, and poor accountability.
Experts describe workplace bullying as repeated, harmful behaviour directed at one or more people, including verbal abuse, humiliation, exclusion, or the deliberate sabotage of work. The effects are far-reaching, from anxiety and burnout to resignations and declining team morale.
“Bullying in the workplace doesn’t just affect individuals; it corrodes entire organisations,” says a labour relations consultant based in Johannesburg. “When workers feel unsafe or undervalued, performance drops, absenteeism rises, and the company’s culture becomes toxic.”
While South African labour laws protect employees against unfair treatment and harassment, specific legislation addressing workplace bullying remains limited. This gap leaves many victims unsure where to turn, fearing retaliation or dismissal if they speak out.
Human resource practitioners are urging companies to take the issue seriously by establishing anti-bullying policies, offering training for managers, and creating confidential reporting systems that empower employees to come forward.
“Silence only benefits the bully,” says a human rights advocate from Pretoria. “Workplaces need to move from a culture of fear to one of respect and accountability.”
As more South Africans begin to share their experiences and call for change, the message is clear, the time to act is now. For every unspoken story of workplace abuse, there’s a reminder that behind every office door, silence may be hiding deep pain.
